When The Kids Go To Bed

Posted by Church Video Ideas under Family, Greg's Favorites, Movies

Don’t worry: this is a G-rated blog. I was reflecting on what makes me smile these days and what I’ve used as a way to not go insane with all the craziness at church. It’s a special time that I look forward to each night. My wife and I started this months ago. Each night, after the kids go to bed, we pop in a DVD and watch various TV shows or movies together. It sounds simple, but it’s been a great stress reliever and is something we’re able to do together and just enjoy laughing together.

First we watched all 3 seasons of “Arrested Development”. I think that show has one of the greatest and most perfectly cast ensembles ever on television. Then we watched all the “Harry Potter” movies (because my wife had read the books, but never saw the movies). Then we watched all 3 “Lord of the Rings” (because my wife had read the books, but never saw the movies). Then we watched seasons 1-3 of “The Office” (gotta love Dwight!). Now we’ve gone back to Season One of “Lost” and have started working our way through each episode. We’re going to watch every episode of “Lost” and then I’m hoping I can get my wife hooked on my favorite show: “24″. I think if we start with Season One, she’ll get hooked!

The challenge of watching episodes on DVD is knowing when to go to bed. It’s so easy to say, “Let’s just watch one more.” Have you experienced that? I have to make myself stop and go to bed. What shows do you enjoy?

EXTRA:

My Tarheels are back on top. Number 1, baby!

I was going to comment on the whole when do you stop thing until I saw your Tarheels comment. Then I almost clicked away. But I thought that would be petty, so I’m commenting.

Yes, we have the same problem. We’ve watched 3 episodes of 24 before in a row.

Wow, my wife and I have been slowly making our way through The Office: Season 2 in this same manner. We’ve been putting our daughter (4 months) down and then we’ll watch an episode before bed.

Of course, we have to add the subtitles to the bottom so we don’t miss anything. We can’t turn the TV up too loud or our “special” time would be interrupted with crying…

Other favorites: I’m currently hooked on Stargate SG1: Season 1 (a friend let me borrow). My wife isn’t as excited about them. :-)

Alias and Battlestar Gallactica are two other really good choices! My husband and I have a special list in our Netflix subscription that is for nothing but TV shows we want to watch. It really is good time together!

I would recommend Firefly. Amazing series.

Yeah, my wife and I did the same thing with Firefly. We said “just one more” until about 2am. heh…

One of my favorite moments of this is when we had our 3rd child. She would be up late at night so I convinced my wife to start watching lost with me. We started on Season 1. Every time the baby would go to sleep we would be watching an episode and it would end and we would say one more. Then the baby would get up during that episode and we’d end up watching 2 or 3 more episodes every night.

My parents gave us the first 5 seasons of 24 for Christmas a couple of years ago. We didn’t get a good night’s sleep for 2 months!

Oh yeah, I stay up waaaay too late watching shows on DVD. The whole “I’ll just watch one more” catches me every time. I get a little sad when I get to the end of a season and don’t have another disc to put in. Of course then I get really annoyed when I watch one on TV and have to sit through stinkin commercials. I’ve recently gotten into Scrubs. For some reason I never caught it when it first started, but now am hooked. Waiting on Netflix to send me another disc. The Office is great, LOST is finally getting good again, Law & Order is one I never thought I’d get hooked on, but am. I’ve got Season 1 of “24″ in my list on Netflix. Hope to start that soon. Really like Keifer Sutherland.

I know the feeling! My wife and I have just finished Season 1 and 2 (at least the half of it before the writers strike) of “Heroes”. Only instead of DVD we did it via Amazon Unbox downloads to our TiVo, but same idea.

I’m thinking of trying “Lost” next - have never seen it but keep hearing good things about it.

I must admit that I did not watch the first season of LOST until it came out on DVD. Then I watched the entire season in about a week. Yes, I had a few of those “just one more” nights. No doubt it is one of the most addictive shows ever.

Love “Arrested Development!” It’s the first TV show I actually bought on TV. When we moved to our new city last fall, we couldn’t get the cable hooked up for almost a month so all we did was watch AD. Some of the cleverest writing ever and a great cast. Of course, “The Office” is great also.

Alas, my wife doesn’t appreciate the humor in either, so I end up watching them when everyone goes to bed. ‘;-)

I thought the reason they put them on DVD was because you were SUPPOSED to watch them all in one night. I just recently got hooked on “JERICHO”. I’m always disappointed in movies or TV shows with a nuclear threat, but the bomb never goes off.

Also, my whole family got into watching “ALIAS”, but kind of thought it jumped the shark when they introduced the whole “Authorized Personnel” element. We stopped watching pretty quick after that.
